  • 7040 Northeast 47th Avenue Portland, OR, 97218 United States (map)

For more information and to RSVP, visit Bird Alliance of Oregon (registration opens 3/25)

every sunday in april, come hang out for a gentle, birdy morning with rey snyder and friends from fbc.pdx rsvp for the first one here:

we’ll wander, listen, and get to know the birds around us by sound—no rush, no pressure. we’ll move at the speed of the group (and the birds), with plenty of pauses to notice what’s calling, singing, or just quietly existing nearby. whether you’re brand new to birding or already love birding by ear, you’re welcome here.

accessibility + what to expect:
* meeting spot: whitaker ponds, under the gazebo
* time: 8:30–10:30 a.m.
* group size: typically small to medium; we’ll stay loosely together but you’re free to spread out within sight/earshot
* distance: up to 1 mile (you’re always welcome to turn around or head back at any time)
* terrain: mostly wide gravel paths, with some narrower packed dirt single-track
* elevation: very minimal (up to ~10 ft of change)
* pace: slow, with frequent stops and lots of standing/listening time
* seating/rest: no formal seating along the route—feel free to bring a stool, cane seat, or anything that helps you rest comfortably
* restroom: single-user porta potty available on site
* transit access: trimet bus #75 stops at ne 47th ave & columbia blvd; short walk north to the park entrance

sensory info:
* sound: we’ll be intentionally listening, so there will be quiet moments—but also bird song, occasional planes overhead, distant traffic from columbia blvd, and group conversation at a low/variable level
* visual: mix of open sky, ponds, and tree cover; light can be bright or dappled depending on weather
* smell: wetland environment—expect earthy/muddy plant smells, sometimes stagnant water scents
* touch/ground feel: gravel underfoot with some uneven patches; single-track sections may feel narrower or slightly bumpier
* weather exposure: mostly outdoors with limited shelter beyond the gazebo at the start; dress for the elements

neurodivergent-friendly notes:
* stimming, fidgeting, moving your body, or taking space is always welcome
* you can engage as much or as little as you want—listening quietly is just as valid as asking questions or sharing observations
* it’s okay to step away, take breaks, or leave early without explanation
* no pressure to know bird sounds already—this is a learning space, not a test
* we’ll pause often, and you’re always welcome to ask for repetition or clarification
if verbal communication is hard in the moment, pointing things out or sharing in your own way is great

this outing is designed to be flexible, low-pressure, and responsive to the group. if you have access needs or questions, feel free to reach out ahead of time—or just come as you are
